Intervention activities are aimed at assisting individuals through a specific crisis related to the abuse of drugs and/or alcohol. Services include evaluation to determine level of care needed to treat the addiction, counseling and appropriate referral for more intensive treatment.
There are many programs available to individuals who are addicted and seeking treatment. Such programs include school-based Student Assistance Programs (SAP), Treatment Alternatives to Street Crimes (TASC), Driving Under the Influence (DUI), and Drug Court offered through the local criminal justice system.
To service business and industry, specific approaches have been developed to aid employees whose job performances have been impaired by substance abuse. This is offered through Employee Assistance Programs (EAP).
Student Assistance Program (SAP)
SAP Provider List
All school districts offer a student assistance program designed for students at risk. Many receive Federal funds through the Safe and Drug Free School Act provided by the State. There is a four-step approach beginning with:
Identification:
Students show through their school behavior or performance that they are experiencing difficulties or they may report problems. The SAP team then begins to work with the student.
Intervention:
Drug and Alcohol intervention may be any of the following:
- Informational conversations and discussions in school.
- Informal intervention involving student's parents if the student is under the age of 14 or the school policies specifies reporting to parents.
Referral
Appropriate SAP core team personnel facilitate referrals to their Drug/Alcohol assessors for appropriate level of care.
Aftercare
School personnel must work closely with the student, parents and colleagues in understanding the recovery
process from a drug and alcohol perspective.
